A local Sunderland student has won an art competition run by housebuilder, Barratt Homes North East. 17-year-old Jamie Henderson, who attends Sunderland College, was crowned the winner of the themed art contest and visited the Teal Park Farm development in Washington to see his framed work hung up and on display to the public.
Barratt Homes North East challenged BTEC Level 3 Art and Design students to create a piece of artwork that included the colour teal, tying in with development’s name, to promote local art talent in the area. Students could choose their own subject, use any materials, and were encouraged to be as creative as possible.
Jamie’s winning mixed media piece was created with acrylic paint and watercolour pencils, depicting a floral woman with orange and teal two-toned hair set on a brush-marked teal background. In addition to having his artwork displayed, Jamie also received a £100 voucher to go towards art supplies for his future studies.
Ashlea Wright, Sales Manager at Teal Park Farm, commented: “We knew that Jamie’s piece would look fantastic in our show home and it was clear that he had put a lot of effort into the bold artwork. We were impressed by all of the entries that we received and it made choosing a winner a challenge, however the bright and contemporary feel of Jamie’s work really caught our eye. We always like to support the communities in which we build and we would like to thank Sunderland College and the students for all the hard work they put into entering the competition.”
Hollie Marshall, Art and Design Lecturer at Sunderland College, commented: “The work that the students produced for the Teal Park Farm art competition was brilliant. By having such an open brief, they were able to explore their creativity and push themselves artistically. We’d like to thank Barratt Homes for letting us be a part of the competition and for putting a piece of the students’ art on display.”
