With the dust still settling on the 2022 Grand National, horse racing fans will soon be turning their attention to the flat season, which is already well underway and providing plenty of thrilling action. The most highly anticipated flat races in the UK are the British Classics series, which is comprised of five races which take place over the course of spring and summer at different racecourses around the country.
As usual, this year’s Classics will kick off with the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, and the latter is already drawing plenty of activity on the Betdaq racing betting page. Run over a distance of one mile, the 2,000 Guineas is open to three-year-old colts and fillies and provides plenty of drama with every passing year. Last time out, it was Poetic Flare who came out on top for trainer Jim Bolger.
With the race fast approaching, let’s take a look at some of the favourites for this year’s 2,000 Guineas, and assess whether they have what it takes to land top prize.
Native Trail
It’s easy to see why Native Trail is being touted as the 5/4 favourite for this year’s 2,000 Guineas. Unbeaten over his five career races, the Charlie Appleby-trained horse is in a rich vein of form and already has a win to his name this year at Newmarket in the Craven Stakes.
Appleby was one of the most successful trainers last year, and it’s no surprise that Native Trail is highly fancied as a result. He will take some stopping, that’s for sure.
Coroebus
At odds of 7/2 at the time of writing, Coroebus is another with sights set on crossing the finish line first in the 2,000 Guineas. Also trained by Appleby, it’ll be interesting to see the two stablemates go head-to-head at Newmarket for one of the most sought-after prizes in flat racing.
Coroebus’s three races have all come at Newmarket, with two wins and one defeat underlining his potential. He is yet to race this year, but capped off 2021 with a win in the Autumn Stakes, and that’s the kind of form he’ll need to produce to win the 2,000 Guineas.
Luxembourg
Another unbeaten colt looking to land a victory in the 2,000 Guineas is Luxembourg. With decorated trainer Aidan O’Brien in his corner, you certainly can’t rule him out, and at odds of around 9/2, many are fancying Luxembourg’s chances.
Last year was his maiden season, and with three wins in three to his name, the task this year is to build on that and add some of the biggest titles.
Perfect Power
The Richard Fahey-trained Perfect Power now has three consecutive wins to his name, including the Greenham Stakes at Newbury earlier this month, and that’s why he has been making moves in the betting market ahead of the 2,000 Guineas.
Whilst all the focus will be on the battle between O’Brien and Appleby, Fahey will be hoping that Perfect Power can cut through the noise to deliver a memorable victory.
Point Lonsdale
Coming in at odds of 12/1, it’s fair to say that Point Lonsdale isn’t exactly the most fancied horse for the 2,000 Guineas, but all it would take would be a couple of underperformances from the top favourites to see him jump into contention.
The O’Brien-trained colt had been unbeaten all through last year up until the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh last September, and it’s clear that that defeat to Native River is still in the minds of the punters. However, it would be no great surprise to see Point Lonsdale get back to his best at Newmarket later this month.
