Labour MP for Redcar, Anna Turley, has today (24th March 2016) expressed her sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims of last night’s terrible murders on the Lakes estate in Redcar.

Speaking in the chamber this morning, Anna said:

“Last night two women were brutally murdered on the Lakes Estate in Redcar. A 34 year old man has been arrested. I am sure the whole house would join me in expressing their horror and their sadness at these terrible murders and to send our thoughts and heartfelt condolences to the victim’s families, particularly the children, and also to the local community at this terrible time.

Mr Speaker, a woman is killed every three days in this country. We have some fantastic agencies and support organisations working with women at risk of domestic violence. But they are stretched to breaking point as funding has been cut. 35 women’s refuges have shut in the last 5 years in the UK. Will the Leader of the House work with the Home Secretary to:

Firstly ensure Cleveland police have all the resources they need to pursue justice in this particular case and support the victims’ families?

Secondly review the impact of cuts to support agencies, refuges and local authority services on domestic violence rates?

And third, give the house an update on when the Strategy for Violence against women and girls will be implemented and what funding will come with it for local services?”
