Members of a choir are encouraging everyone to make their New Year’s resolution to sing, whatever their ability.

The Tuneless Choir Newcastle upon Tyne will be open to all on 14th January 2017, were even the ‘wrong’ notes are the right notes!  The original Tuneless Choir began in West Bridgford, Nottingham, in January 2016. It has proved to be very popular, with over a hundred people attending twice a month.

The Newcastle Tuneless Choir was launched on 17th September 2016 and is the mostly northerly in England.   Choir Leader Ashleigh Lowes and Manager Ann ‘Minty’ Nicol say they find the sessions immensely enjoyable and would love to welcome you to sing like no one is listening.  That’s what I do Minty added!

The end of 2016 knees up was full of laughter as well as singing with everyone enjoying the ‘sing-off’ of Twelve Days of Christmas and Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer; and Food, Glorious Food had to be heard to be believed.

Tuneless Choir founder Nadine Cooper says, “We knew about the benefits of singing before we launched the choir last year.  It releases the brain’s feel-good chemicals and increase life satisfaction.  Since the launch, new research has shown that singing in a choir helps reduce stress and boost the immune system.  People say because they can simply sing for fun they can take their minds off the day’s troubles and boost their mood.

Leader of the founding choir, Bernie Bracha, says, “Tuneless Choir is making a difference to people’s lives, and we would love more people to discover the delight of belting out the lyrics to their favourite songs.  Having no fear of judgement really does give our choir members the confidence to ‘sing like no one is listening’” adds Bernie.

People aren’t divided into parts, so everyone sings the lead vocals at whatever pitch they can manage and results in a sound much better than the sum of the individuals.  Top picks at Tuneless Choir Newcastle include ‘Delilah’ , ‘Thank you for the Music’ and ‘The Bear Necessities’.

Tuneless Choir Newcastle meet at 2.00pm on 14th and 28th January 2017 at the Church of St Thomas the Martyr, Haymarket, when will be welcoming new and current members.  First time attendance is £10 which includes registration and folder of ‘starter’ lyrics.  Then, £7 if you “pay as you sing” or £40 for eight sessions (equivalent of £5 per session) and includes refreshments.  So resolve to do something enjoyable and take this opportunity to do something uplifting in the New Year.
