VISITORS to the new Stockton Town Centre can now step back through nearly 150 years.
Six cast bronze plaques have been installed across the town to commemorate people, places and events important to the history of the town.
They feature information about Dodshon’s Fountain, trams, Stockton International Riverside Festival, the Almshouses as well as the Hirings Fair, which saw servants and labourers sell their services in the 1900s, and the Cherry Fairs which were held every spring until the early 1900s.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “Stockton Town Centre has a rich, varied and interesting history and heritage. Although the town has transformed into a bustling, vibrant, welcoming and enticing town fit for the 21st Century, it is important that the town’s past – our successes and the plight of our poor – are not forgotten.
“The heritage plaques are a fantastic way of commemorating and sharing key parts of the town’s history and heritage with visitors and future generations.”
