Walkers found one of their colleagues in a pickle after setting off on a charity trek up three Yorkshire peaks.

But fundraiser Nick Appleyard assured them that he often took a couple of pickled eggs on his walks, complete with a bottle of Tabasco sauce.

“They did look at bit bemused when I produced the eggs and sauce and I’m not sure they fully appreciated my tastes,” said Nick, of Langton, near Gainford. “But they must have worked as I completed the walk and the very next day finished a 12-miler with a friend.”

Property consultant Nick joined a party of walkers tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, a gruelling 24 mile trek totalling 5,200ft of climb, in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice.

“I’ve done a few events for St Teresa’s, which is such a great cause, and it proved to be a lovely day in the Yorkshire Dales with some awesome views,” said Nick. “We came across another group doing the event in bare feet for charity, which was humbling and while the first six miles felt the hardest, the day seemed to pass quickly chatting to some lovely people. I’d certainly recommend the challenge to anyone thinking of joining the next two walks.”

The Yorkshire Peaks walk was the first of a new set of challenges to raise much-needed funds for St Teresa’s Hospice, which provides free in-patient and community care for people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire.

The idea of hospice relationships and marketing lead Lyn Hatch the events are set to raise thousands of pounds for the charity.

She said: “For some participants these challenges are up there with the biggest things they have tackled in their lives and their training and dedication to fundraising has been incredible to watch.

“The first of the three planned walks was a superb day and everyone dug deep to manage a fantastic achievement, with some battling injuries, a few nerves and kit challenges on the day.

The weather was spot on, just a few drops of rain, mostly overcast and a bit of sunshine, so perfect walking conditions all round.

“The scenery was truly spectacular and the miles melted away as folk chatted and mingled, getting to know one another.”

For event leader Dave Wilson it was the 24th time of walking the route but he claimed each one was different.

Lyn said, in the post-pandemic world, fundraising continued to be a challenge. The first Three Peaks event had raised almost £10,000 and hopes were high for the other walks planned for June 11, which would be joined by long-time supporters Physique Gym in Darlington, and July 9, which would involve a group of ladies pulled together by in-patient unit nurse Naomi Hall.

Corporate sponsors of the Three Peaks events include the Devonport at Middleton One Row, NE Workspace Solutions and Wellbeing Doctor. Participants have also been enjoying tours of the hospice and welcome evenings.
