Rizwan Muazzam Qawwali

Torchbearers of the Qawwali tradition.
Following an acclaimed show at Sage Gateshead in 2017, the internationally renowned Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwals return for an evening of majestic and entrancing Sufi music.
Drawing on a rich vein of Islamic and Sufi poetry, Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music from the Indian subcontinent and Rizwan-Muazzam come from a direct family line of spiritual Qawwali singers that spans five centuries.
Recent highlights have included performances at the Commonwealth Games, Australia, in April 2018, and an exciting new collaboration with Susheela Raman in Abu Dhabi. The group have also been working on new material, so you can expect new music alongside Qawwali classics, as Rizwan-Muazzam continue to push the boundaries of the genre.

Roy Harper

Renowned folk singer-songwriter Roy Harper has announced a major UK tour for 2019 celebrating 50 years of classic tracks. The shows will include Harper’s famed epic McGoohan’s Blues from his 1968 album, Folkjokeopus.
Roy Harper’s career has spanned six decades. He has enjoyed collaborations with and tributes from many of his contemporaries, including Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson and many more with Fleet Foxes, Joanna Newsom and Johnny Marr affirmed fans”
Harper will joined by Bill Shanley and an ensemble of musicians.

Ian Siegal: Unplugged

2018 was another milestone year for the UK’s favourite contemporary bluesman and renegade Americana man. He scooped Best Male Vocalist and Best Acoustic Artist in the UK Blues Awards, adding to a long list of accolades in the UK, Europe and USA.
For Spring 2019 Ian will tour an unplugged presentation of songs from his latest album All The Rage including a beautifully adapted acoustic version of the soul stunner, Sweet Souvenir.
While he is known as a bluesman and often seen fronting his electric band, it’s just one shade in the palette of an artist who slips between continents, eras and expectations. His forte is playing to an audience. He takes command of the stage in a way very few artists alive today can match. Sweat, passion, humour, incendiary slide guitar and a soul-infused voice big enough to fell trees. When it’s just man and guitar, those qualities shine through even stronger.
Special guest Michael Littlefield, the North East’s rising bluesman and founder of The King Bees, opens the evening with a solo acoustic set.

Martha Hill + Talk Like Tigers + Zak Younger Banks

See some of the North East’s most exciting up-and-coming artists.
Martha Hill’s left-field pop has taken her from busking on Northumberland Street to selling out shows around Newcastle. Her latest single, Spiders, smartly covers themes of mental health and displacement set to strong beats and acoustic guitar. Martha Hill has supported artists such as Mahalia and Let’s Eat Grandma.
Talk Like Tigers are a hypnotic electro-pop band from the North East of England. The band are twin sisters, Charlotte and Stephanie, whose vocals and seamless, velvet harmonies have been recorded by Sony and have taken them around the world as professional touring musicians. After being spotted by Tom Robinson they have enjoyed plays on BBC 6 music and their new single, Move, promises to cement their reputation as one of the North East’s most exciting alt-pop bands.
Newcastle and Glasgow based indie/folk singer-songwriter Zak Younger Banks combines emotionally raw vocals, poetic lyrics and intricate guitar arrangements to create original and distinctive songs. His music and writing draws comparison to Leonard Cohen, Bon Iver, and John Smith. Zak’s self-released debut EP, Wrong Turns, is a collection of original songs and instrumental music recorded in Port Appin in the Scottish Highlands, and was received well on a mini-tour of venues in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle and London.

Unconstrained by limitations and conventions, Norwegian composer and tuba player Daniel Herskedal has earned a reputation as a musician who has pushed his instrument’s boundaries technically and sonically and who creates spellbinding and mesmerically beautiful music.
Following the release of his first album, Slow Eastbound Train, Herskedal toured throughout Europe. His follow up, The Roc, prompted critics to praise the wide mix of influences from folk, jazz, classical and Arabic sources.
His third album, Voyage, emerges as his most defining album yet, merging awe-inspiring beauty with a refreshingly original sound
Paul Taylor is an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specialising in improvisation. The music is evocative, alluring and unique; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique.

David Gray Plus Support

David Gray is releasing his first album of new material in four years, Gold in a Brass Age, which finds Gray in renewed creative form.
Defined by an intuitive approach from Gray, it explores new electronic textures and sound palettes, along with new production techniques in the process. Using a cut and paste approach to the arrangement of songs, the album’s atmospheric and experimental undertones are evident throughout.
The album’s title is drawn from Raymond Carver’s short story, Blackbird Pie, and informed by the regenerative cut and thrust of Gray’s adopted home of London and a fascination with the natural world, which has long since consumed his time outside of music.
Gold in a Brass Age will be David Gray’s eleventh album in a career that spans more than 25 years, several Brit and Grammy nominations, and three No.1 UK albums, including for the breakout multi-platinum White Ladder. It is also a vital new collection of songs from an artist still revelling in his passion for song-craft, pushing himself into unfamiliar terrain, surprising himself as much as his fans along the way.
