Northumberland racing driver Tony Wells clinched the LMP3 Cup championship after a second place finish at Silverstone last weekend.
The Ecurie Ecosse Nielsen team of Wells and Colin Noble just needed a fifth place finish to become the champions at a very wet Silverstone last Saturday. But after qualifying fifth on the grid the pair stole second place on the final lap to clinch the title champions.
A delighted Wells said: “We just needed fifth to win the title so I just wanted to get the car round without getting involved in any trouble. It’s fantastic to have won the championship this year.”
The win was the second consecutive title for his co-driver Colin Noble. He said: “I’m obviously thrilled to have won the LMP3 Cup Championship for the second year in succession and thanks must go to all my sponsors, especially Merit Holdings, for their continued support.”
Wells will now head to Portugal later this month to race in the final event of the Michelin Le Mans Cup and the European Le Mans Series at the Algarve Circuit at Portimao.
The pair will team up again for the Asian Le Mans Series which starts at the end of November at the Shanghai International Circuit in China.
