After a presentation by Tees Transporter Bridge Learning, Education and Events Officer Tosh Warwick on proposals for the group, those in attendance expressed interest in joining together to assist visitors to the Bridge, host exhibitions, promote the Bridge’s heritage at events and carry out research to support the new Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience.

Following the meeting at the Bridge’s Visitor Centre, currently in the final stages of enhancement works as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project, members of the community took the first steps towards in forming an official Friends Group.

Rob Nichols, author of Boro fanzine Fly Me To The Moon who attended the meeting, said: “I am excited about the formation of a friends group for the Transporter Bridge which will assist in sharing the Tees Transporter Visitor Centre. The Friends can help assist in putting our icon at the heart of the community.”

Tosh Warwick added: “It is fantastic to see the enthusiasm for the Transporter come together here at the Bridge. People are very passionate about our most famous landmark and a Friends group is a fantastic opportunity for all to work with the new Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience in sharing a key part of our heritage.”

A follow up meeting will take place in the coming weeks to formally launch the group, with organisers welcoming any other individuals or groups interested in involvement with the Friends group to get in touch.

Anyone interested should contact Tosh Warwick at transporterbridge@middlesbrough.gov.uk or on (01642) 728818 for more information on how to get involved.
