Proposals for a new residential development to the west of Newcastle are set to move forward after being backed by Newcastle City Council’s planning committee.
Banks Property put forward plans for the new development at West Brunton, within the boundaries of the Newcastle Great Park, which included up to 73 high quality new homes being built on a 4.5-hectare site identified as part of a Neighbourhood Growth Area in the City Council’s Local Plan Policy.
The proposals were recommended for approval by the Council’s expert planning officers – and now, the members of its planning committee have been minded to follow their officers’ guidance.
The West Brunton development will include a range of different house types and a 15 per cent allocation of affordable housing, while it will also deliver a biodiversity net gain of at least ten per cent through a range of environmental and ecological enhancements.
Significant community contributions will be made in support of local primary education and special educational needs provision, nature reserves, parks and allotments, with the site also including its own play area.
A new footpath/cyclepath will be built through to Brunton Lane from the new development, which is within easy reach of local amenities, schools and bus routes, while a new sustainable urban drainage system will also be installed as part of the development.
The Banks Property project team will now finalise the details of its development plans, with construction work potentially beginning next year.
Jamilah Hassan, community relations manager at the Banks Group, says: “Having had a recommendation for approval for our West Brunton plans, we’re very pleased that the members of Newcastle City Council’s planning committee have seen fit to give them their support.
“This is a logical location for the type of high-quality development we’ll now be bringing forward, which is close to both the amenities within Newcastle Great Park’s district centre and a very well-connected public transport system.
“There is a clear need to boost the supply of quality homes in North East England and across the UK as a whole, both to ensure people have the housing options they need in the places they want to live and to support the wider UK economy’s growth ambitions.
“Our West Brunton development will contribute towards meeting both these goals and we’re excited to now be able to get on with realising the potential that this site offers.”
