Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 10.30.14YOUNG book-lovers from Stockton Borough were put to the test on their favourite stories, books and characters in a special quiz as part of World Book Day on Thursday (3 March).

Now in its 19th year, World Book Day aims to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading.

The third annual quiz was held at Stockton Central Library where teams of year 7 and 8 pupils from Northfield School, Grangefield Academy, Conyers Academy and Yarm School were asked a range of fun book-themed questions to mark the occasion.

Among the questions, the youngsters were asked to name the lion in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the famous playwright born 400 years ago who lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, and which book includes the characters Charlie Bucket, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee.

The winners were awarded with a goodie bag of books and special commemorative shield to display at school. All participants received a free book to take home.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “The World Book Day quiz is just one of many excellent events in our libraries which inspire people of all ages to continue reading. It is always a fun and exciting event that challenges children about the stories they have already read, while encouraging them to try new books and learn something new. Congratulations to the winning teams and to all of the pupils who participated yesterday.”
