The Cafe has been formed from the cookery classes that are run for young people through the Children North East WEYES (West End Youth Enquiry Service) Project on a Monday evening.  The group, having achieved their food hygiene awards, have already provided professional catering for outside organisations and have made cakes for fundraising events.

After visiting several other successful youth cafes throughout the country, they were inspired to set up themselves to support other young people in Newcastle.   The work carried out by the WEYES project made the cookery group realise that a youth-led cafe would be a perfect accompaniment to the successful services already provided.

Teresa Bromilow, Project Worker at WEYES said: “The support received from both Reece Group Limited and players of People’s Postcode Lottery has allowed the young people to fulfil a dream they’ve had since the beginning of the Cookery Group.  Young people from some of the most deprived parts of Newcastle have been able to showcase their cooking skills as well as their business skills in setting up this venture.

The cooking sessions, as well as the cafe, have encouraged young people to develop interests and achieve personal goals whilst providing them with necessary life skills.”

The Cafe, based at the Children North East WEYES Project, opens on Thursday 20th August 3.30pm – 6.30pm.  The menu, developed by the young people, includes hot meals, sandwiches, snacks and drinks all under £1.  WEYES services are for 14-25 year olds and all are welcomed to the project.
