Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) has today announced the launch of flights to one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations next summer.

Managing Director David Grant welcomed the news that Balkan Holidays will be operating a weekly service to Bourgas in Bulgaria for summer ’19 from 18th May to 28th September.

“Balkan offer excellent value for money and popular holiday destinations; they are a welcome addition to DTVA.  This announcement demonstrates that when there are opportunities to attract new leisure flights, we will do all we can to make it happen.”

Balkan Holidays are one of the leading specialists for holidays to Bulgaria and today’s announcement marks their return to Durham Tees Valley after a number of years.

Chris Rand, Sales and Marketing Manager from Balkan Holidays said

“We are delighted to be adding this new weekly flight to Bourgas from DTVA as part of our Summer 19 schedule.  Our customers know that we have a long history of providing great value summer holidays and are ensuring this by holding many of our prices from this year for Summer 19.”

Added Mr Grant “As we made clear in our business plan for the Airport and with the launch of our Flying for the Future campaign, maintaining and developing vital regional and global connections, such as through the KLM service to Amsterdam Schiphol is a priority for us.

“However, today’s announcement is the result of lots of hard work to create the conditions that allow us when a commercially viable opportunity arises, to deliver leisure flights to DTVA. The Airport has invested to make this happen, and going forward, together with support from our stakeholders, we can build stronger cases for further new routes.”

“When we do attract new services, it is, of course, crucial that they are supported and I’m sure there will be a very positive response to today’s announcement.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “While temporary package holidays are welcome, we need proper airlines based at our airport. I’ve made no secret that our airport can be a success, but only under new ownership. In the coming weeks I’ll be moving into the next phase of discussions with Peel to bring our airport back into public ownership.”
