LONELY, elderly and vulnerable people are being given a lifeline this Christmas – as a Teesside care home throws open its doors.
The Beeches Care Home, in Stockton-on-Tees, is inviting people who face Christmas alone to join staff and residents on 25th December, as a new report reveals the extent of festive loneliness in the UK.
Nearly 400,000 people aged 65 and over in the UK are worried about being lonely over Christmas, new research from Age UK has found. 60% said they are not expecting festive happiness to be part of their Christmas this year.
Topping the list of worries, 42% said missing loved ones who have passed away.
The campaign at The Beeches aims to give the most vulnerable in the Stockton community somewhere to celebrate and enjoy the company of others. They are invited to make the home theirs for the day, enjoy a three-course traditional lunch and festive activities.
Sue Abdi, Manager at the care home, which is part of the Hill Care Group, said: “It is heartbreaking when you read the statistics from Age UK. Millions of elderly people feel Christmas wont be a happy occasion and that cannot be allowed to continue.
“This is the second year we have run this campaign. No one should be alone on Christmas day. We can promise anyone facing Christmas alone a wonderful festive atmosphere and a hot meal. I hope as many will join us as possible.”
The Beeches is partnering with the local police, fire brigade and community centres to spread awareness of loneliness among vulnerable groups. If any local charities or businesses are interested in lending their support for the Christmas Open Day please contact the care home.
