Money management scheme for vulnerable people needs your help

19186A project which aims to teach vulnerable Darlington residents about money management needs help to secure its future.

Darlington Credit Union’s MoneySmart project has reached the second stage of the process to receive funding from the RBS Skills and Opportunities Fund.

The not-for-profit organisation now needs members of the public to vote for the project before voting closes at noon on Friday so that it can secure the £34,000 needed to ensure that it can help as many people as possible.

MoneySmart aims to support up to 200 vulnerable people from the area by providing one-to-one money management advice for clients to help them develop the skills they need to become more financially aware and included. The scheme also runs financial education workshops for those aged 15 and over.

Tony Brockley, Darlington Credit Union Chief Executive, said: “Many schools in the area are now recognising the importance of providing financial education from a young age. However, many people still do not have the financial knowledge needed to properly manage their own money.

“We want to support the great work that the schools are doing by providing personal money management support and running workshops to help bridge any knowledge gap and empower more people to become financially-included. However, if we don’t secure the funding necessary to pay for the MoneySmart project then all of that will be in jeopardy.

“We need members of the public to log onto the Skills and Opportunities Fund website and vote for Darlington Credit Union. It would be a travesty if we couldn’t run the project to its full potential. We are the only Darlington-based organisation to reach this stage, so now we need the whole town to get behind us!”

Darlington Credit Union is due to hold its sixth Annual General Meeting on Wednesday April 20 6pm-7.30pm at St Augustine’s Parish Centre, Larchfield Street, Darlington.
