Work has started on a new development of 18 affordable homes in the west of Newcastle.
The development on Springfield Road in Sheriff Leas, Newcastle is being delivered by a partnership of Karbon Homes and Newcastle City Council and is part of a programme of homes scheduled to be delivered by the growing not-for-profit landlord over the next four years.
The scheme, which is located within easy reach of Newcastle city centre and the A1, will feature 10 one and two bedroom bungalows for older residents and eight two bedroom flats to suit local housing needs.
The main contractor for the site is NB Clark of Morpeth and construction is expected to take around 12 months to complete. The development has been designed by award winning Newcastle-based architects JDDK.
Karbon Homes have worked closely with Newcastle City Council to bring this scheme forward, having previously delivered nine phases of affordable homes in nearby Newbiggin Hall, with a tenth phase of 13 homes just about to begin.

Councillor Jane Streather, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health at Newcastle City Council, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Karbon Homes on another really important development for the Council.
“We need more affordable housing for rent, including homes for older people are needed in the city and this is a great example of how, by working in partnership with developers, we can deliver quality homes to meet the needs of all our residents.”
The development at Sheriff Leas is just one small part of Karbon Homes’ £250m development programme across the North East, which will see 2,400 homes delivered over the next four years – adding 10% to the landlord’s existing 24,000 strong stock.
In Newcastle, besides the new homes in Newbiggin Hall, Karbon Homes also has planning permission for a new development in nearby Kenton, and has recently completed three supported housing developments worth £5m, with 50 homes on three sites across the city.
