Newcastle Science Central will present its plans for the future at its annual open day on Thursday 4 May 2017.
The Core is opening its doors to the public once again on Thursday 4 May between 11am – 3pm or 5pm – 7pm, where attendees will be able hear first-hand about current developments, new buildings planned, as well as ground-breaking research being carried out by the academics and businesses located there.
Pat Ritchie, Chief Executive of Newcastle City Council said: “Developments on Newcastle Science Central are progressing apace and new structures are rising from the ground as construction of new facilities continue on site.
“As the former home to Scottish and Newcastle, it is once again becoming a hive of activity that will develop into a brand new community for future generations, connecting the West end back into the city centre.
“It’s really important that people understand what’s happening on the site, and benefit from the regeneration going on here, which is why we are opening our doors to the public to come and find out more.”
Future plans for the site include a Learning and Teaching Centre, Newcastle Laboratory, two national innovation centres (the National Innovation Centre for Ageing and the National Innovation Centre for Data) and 200,000 sq. ft of Grade A office space. Options are being explored on others plots for business use as well as over 450 new homes.
Key representatives involved in current and upcoming buildings on site will be presenting their plans and showcasing what this will mean for the businesses and community in Newcastle.
Rose Gilroy, Professor of Ageing, Policy & Planning at Newcastle University, said: “There are already exciting collaborations and research projects happening on Science Central which will have a real impact on how we live, and create sustainable cities for future generations. I encourage the local community in Newcastle to attend the open day in order to find out more about what is happening on site but also how they can be involved.”
Newcastle University academics will be discussing exciting developments in their research including the Urban Observatory, an electric vehicle filling station, and city futures.
Attendees will be able to join regular tours of the site which will culminate in the new carbon capture garden, currently being seeded. Talks presenting the vision for Newcastle Science Central as well as the key research areas, ageing, data and energy, will run every half hour and are open to all attendees.
