A popular Stokesley riverside walkway has been enhanced thanks to the district council.
A £5000 grant from Hambleton’s Small Grant Scheme has seen the old, dilapidated and unsightly metal and concrete fencing from the old ford at the east end of the River Leven removed and replaced. Broken benches and litter bins have also been renewed.
“The peaceful walk along the River Leven is much loved by residents and visitors alike. The new fencing, benches and bins have significantly improved this area,” said Lynn Southern, Chair of the Stokesley River Leven Group.
The improvement scheme – known as GLEAM – Greater Leven Enhancement and Management – has brought together local groups, individuals and businesses to improve various aspects of the river and its wildlife.
“The success of the whole scheme depends massively on people joining in and a key aim of the project is to promote the sense of belonging – that can be everything from taking part in a river clean-up, giving professional advice on suitable river plants or growing the plants from seed,” added Lynn.
“The next stage of GLEAM is to replace and widen the footpath downstream of the church ford to dramatically improve and open up access for everyone as well as enhance the river through Stokesley.”
And as a final element of the current project the east end riverbank near Town End Bridge is to be reinstated as a Memorial Garden – a dedication ceremony for it will take place at 10am on Saturday 1st July.
