Young people in Northumberland will be competing in their very own Olympic Games next week.Over 1600 students from all over the county will take part in the Northumberland School Games, held this year in Cramlington on 21nd and 22nd June.
Organised by Active Northumberland, Northumberland Sport, School Games Organisers and head teachers, youngsters will compete in 21 competitions consisting of 10 different sports including volleyball, gymnastics, tennis, athletics and rugby.
North East sporting champions boxer Glenn McCrory, Olympic gymnast Craig Heap and World Cup Rugby star Tamara Taylor will all be there to cheer the next generation of sports stars on.
Marie-Anne Dowson, Event Manager, said “The Games are the culmination of hundreds of qualifying competitions that have been taken place all across the county. The two days are a chance for young people not just to compete but also be inspired, celebrate achievements and enjoy being part of the biggest school sports event of the year.”
Glenn McGrory, who is also Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland and Education Network Sporting Ambassador said, “I’m delighted to be at the 5th Northumberland School Games, which builds on the success of the previous years. I wish every youngster taking part the best of luck and I am sure everyone will show the spirit of the games and thoroughly enjoy themselves.”
The Northumberland School Games are supported by partners Education Network, Cramlington Town Council and Music Partnership North.
Northumberland School Games starts on 21 June with an opening ceremony at 10.30 at Concordia, Cramlington followed by a parade to Cramlington Learning Village where the competitions will take place over the two days.
