Ali Brownlee 5k deadline extended

Ali Brownlee Cleveland Centre 5k Riverside Run RUNNERS of all ages and abilities are putting the finishing touches to their training in the build-up to one of the region’s flagship events.

And the deadline for entries has now been extended to midnight on Monday, May 30 to give as many people as possible a chance to sign up.

The starting gun will go on the ever-popular Ali Brownlee Cleveland Centre 5k Riverside Run on Sunday, June 5.

The race was renamed for 2016 in tribute to the popular BBC Tees breakfast presenter and ‘Voice of the Boro’ who died in February after a short battle with cancer.

With more than a thousand entrants already signed up for the 5k and over 500 in for the CCG 2k Fun Run, it’s guaranteed to be a fantastic day out for the whole family, and a great chance for runners and walkers to raise much-need funds for charities and good causes.

And all those crossing the finishing line will be rewarded with a brand new commemorative running T-shirt in the bold red and white of Ali’s beloved Boro.

Entrants will once again follow the popular route from the Riverside Stadium past some of the town’s best known landmarks including Temenos and the Transporter Bridge, before a memorable finish beside the hallowed turf inside the stadium.

And this week Centre mascot Cleveland Croc met up with event organisers to model the new T-shirt as the countdown begins to the big day.

Cleveland Centre Manager Graeme Skillen said: “As sponsors of the 5k once again, everyone at the Cleveland Centre is excited about the big run on what promises to be a day laced with memories of the great man that was Ali Brownlee.

“The 5k is always a wonderful community event and I’m sure everyone will be thinking of Ali when they run through the Riverside.”

Race Director Scott Hydon said: “This year’s 5k will be a fitting tribute to Ali who was such a great supporter of all our Run middlesbrough events.

“We’ve extended the entry deadline by a few days so I hope as many people as possible sign up for what will be a truly memorable event starting and finishing at the Riverside Stadium.”
