The experiences of First World War soldiers on the frontline are to be brought to life next month by a group of amateur actors with learning disabilities.
The adults, who attend Durham County Council’s Pathways service, will perform a new play, entitled Our Street, at the Alun Armstrong Theatre in Stanley, on Tuesday, 6 October.
The play explores what happened to members, tutors and students of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) after war broke out in 1914.
It is part of the WEA in World War 1 project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Paul Graydon, Durham County Council Pathways area manager, said: “The performers are a group of energetic, talented actors. They are an extremely inspirational collection of people, who I’m sure will put on an unforgettable show.”
The group are being supported by students from Derwentside College who are providing their hair and makeup expertise. The vintage British Red Cross shop, in Newcastle, have provided vintage clothing to help ensure the performance is as authentic as possible.
The performance starts at 1.30pm and is free.
