A supporter with a special connection to St Oswald’s Hospice has organised a sponsored walk to give back to the charity that cared for her mum.
Amber Roberts, from Newcastle, completed the walk in memory of her mum Julie, who was cared for at St Oswald’s last year. Julie used the Hospice’s day services and inpatient unit last year after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Amber continues to be supported by the Hospice team and regularly meets with Terri, a social worker at St Oswald’s.
The 24-year-old took part in the walk with colleagues from a 12 week employability programme she is currently involved in, a nationally-recognised qualification run by the Prince’s Trust in collaboration with Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
Amber completed the seven mile walk on Thursday 5th April, a circular route from North Shields walking via Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and back to North Shields Fish Quay.
Talking about the walk, Amber said: “The walk seemed like the perfect way to support St Oswald’s and say thank you for all they have done for me and my Mum. As part of the employability programme, we had to organise an event for charity and because of my connection to St Oswald’s, as a group we decided it was the right charity to support.
“I really enjoyed the walk, and knowing that I was helping such a deserving charity while doing it made it even more worthwhile. Luckily, the weather was really on our side and we had a great day. We even brought collection buckets with us to raise as much money as possible. We are still raising money so if you would like to support us you can donate via the Just Giving link.”
Stewart Lamb, Team Leader of the Prince’s Trust employability programme in collaboration with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Amber and the rest of the team have been great over the last 11 weeks, they have done some amazing things and have finished off with this great fundraising event.”
Terri Walls, Social Worker at St Oswald’s, tells us more: “I am really impressed with what Amber has achieved. It’s a privilege to have supported Amber and her mum Julie, and it’s lovely that she is now raising money awareness of the Hospice to benefit other families like her.”
