A LIFE AFFIRMING photographic exhibition will showcase the impact of a brain injury on five North East people, while raising funds for a leading charity.

Life After Brain Injury will feature the work of Dr Amy Izycky, a keen photographer who also works as a clinical psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist with people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

And now her images, which highlight how people continue with their lives after having had a severe injury, will go on public view, thanks to the support of a County Durham firm of solicitors.

The exhibition – which will run at Newcastle’s Mushroom Works in October – is being sponsored by EMG Solicitors in aid of Headway – the brain injury association.

EMG, based at Abbeywoods Business Park, is a strong supporter of the charity and is currently holder of Headway’s corporate baton with a pledge to a year of fund raising activity.

Sponsoring the exhibition is only one of a whole host of activities that the firm has planned during the year to help the charity, which it knows well because of its experience in Court of Protection work.

Dr Izycky has been taking the photographs over the last year, with individuals ranging from a Sunderland man who was left with disabilities after three strokes to a young woman who acquired a brain injury after a birth trauma.

“All human beings are born with innate drives and instincts and those pleasure and life seeking drives that shape life and personality are not destroyed by a head injury,” said Dr Izycky.

“I was privileged to work with – and get close to – the five individuals that took part in this project to help understand their stories.

“They and their stories help us, as an audience, to understand the reality of life post head injury and how the painful losses associated with injury are managed, alongside the on-going drive and personality that finds expression in the most individual of ways.”

The exhibition will launch with a reception and preview on Friday 13 October, and tickets cost £10 each, with all proceeds going to the charity.

The following day – 14 October – it will be open to the general public to give them the opportunity to see the engaging photographs for free, although donations to the charity will be welcome.

All the photographs will be available to buy, as will Christmas cards based on those designed by the subjects of the pictures.

Emma Gaudern, Managing Director of EMG Solicitors, said that the photographs captured perfectly the story of the subjects.

“They are fantastic, candid images which show five people who deal with a brain injury on a daily basis but who lead full and positive lives,” she said.

“We are delighted to be sponsoring the exhibition and we hope that as many people as possible will come along and see it.”

Tickets for the preview evening are available at £10 each by emailing events@emgsolicitors.com
