A Dundas Market business has expanded and moved into a shop in Middlesbrough’s Dundas Shopping Centre to create a community hub for gamers and comic fans.
InterStellar Comics has opened a new shop accessed from Wilson Street at the rear of Dundas Shopping Centre. The business which sells comics, games, collectables and T-shirts from the worlds of sci-fi, fantasy and action heroes started life in Dundas Market in an Enterprise Unit in April 2017, grew into a larger market unit and has now moved into a shop.
In addition to a larger range of stock, the new shop will also have sofas, a painting area and gaming tables, all of form part of owner Michael McQuillan’s plans to create a focal point for the area’s gaming community and comic enthusiasts.
He says: “I’ve now got the space where everyone is welcome to drop in to play games or chat about comics with me. I want to grow my loyal customer base by starting after hours gaming sessions and an after school club. I really enjoyed working in the friendly atmosphere of Dundas Market and by staying within the shopping centre I can still be part of that supportive traders’ community.”
David Harris, Dundas Market Manager says: “This is the sixth business which started in Dundas Market and has successfully transferred into the shopping centre following a period of growth, underscoring our reputation as the home of the entrepreneur.
“In addition to InterStellar Comics, LD Printing, the Festival Shop, Tik Tok, Homefair Blinds and Buckshees Military Surplus all started in the market and moved into the shopping centre.”
A new tenant is already lined up to take over InterStellar’s unit in Dundas Market and will be one of three new businesses which will open in Middlesbrough’s only indoor market in the next month.
Mr Harris continues: “We still have a few units available, especially for traders looking to sell toys, music/games/books or fruit and veg, but we are always interested to hear from people with an idea for a new business, or who are looking to open a second outlet for their existing business.
“For new traders who want to test out a business idea, we also offer a small number of Enterprise Units from £60 per week, which equates to just £10 a day, on short term tenant agreements. Michael started InterStellar Comics in an Enterprise Unit and look where he is now.”
