Four gymnasts from Deerness Gymnastics Academy beat the world’s best acrobats as they took the gold medal in an international competition in Switzerland last week.

Jesse Heskett, Finn Gavin, Paul Dixon and Stephen Dixon were competing as a Men’s Group and were up against the current World Champions from China in the Geneva World Cup. However, the Durham gymnasts competing from Great Britain in their first international competition together beat the Chinese team with a score of 29.43 to take the coveted gold medal.

Four other gymnasts from Deerness Gymnastics Academy were also competing with the Women’s Pair the 12-18 age group, Tatiana and Katerina Dubov winning Bronze and Cara Winship and Georgia Hewison narrowly missing out on a medal coming 4th in the 11-16 Women’s Pair.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy is a high-performance centre in acrobatics for British Gymnastics. It is located in Ushaw Moor near Durham

“It’s always great to win gold, but even more so when it’s unexpected. We entered this competition not expecting to win but to benchmark ourselves against the other acrobats from around the world. The results are great for all of the gymnasts, the coaches and parents but also the hundreds of younger gymnasts back at the club who will hopefully be inspired by this success,” said Stuart Thompson, head of acrobatics, Deerness Gymnastics Academy.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching in acrobatics, tumbling and trampolining is available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years and baby gym sessions take place on weekdays.
