Gymnasts from Deerness Gymnastics Academy are heading to Switzerland to compete against some of the best acrobats in the world in the Geneva World Cup taking place from Thursday 25 May until Saturday 27 May.

Jesse Heskett, a former world champion, competing with Finn Gavin, Paul Dixon and Stephen Dixon will come up against the reigning World Champions from China in the Senior Men’s Competition.

Cara Winship and Georgia Hewison will compete together for the first time in a major competition as a women’s pair in the 11-16 category. Last year Georgia won a bronze medal in the World Championships in a mixed pair combination.

Another women’s pair, competing in the 12-18 age group is Tatiana and Katerina Dubov.

It is the first time that any of the combinations have competed together on the international stage.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy is a high-performance centre in acrobatics for British Gymnastics. It is located in Ushaw Moor near Durham

“This competition is very important in terms of the preparation for the British Championships and the major international competitions such as the European and Worlds coming up later this year and next year,” said Stuart Thompson, head of acrobatics, Deerness Gymnastics Academy.

“Here at Deerness Gymnastics Academy, we have a strong history as a competitive club from regional to international level. Our gymnasts work really hard and this competition is as much about gaining the confidence and skills required for competitive events and to see how they compare against the competition as it is the final results. But the whole club is wishing them all the best as they head to Europe.”

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching in acrobatics, tumbling and trampolining is available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years and baby gym sessions take place on weekdays.
