Deerness Trio Compete for GB in European Championships

Three gymnasts from Deerness Gymnastics Academy are heading to Poland to take on some of the finest acrobatic gymnasts in Europe as they head to the 2017 Junior European Championships which are taking place next week from 19-22 October.

The trio, Caitlin Owston (19), Amelia Pamler (18) and Bethany MacDougall (14) all from County Durham, will compete as a Women’s’ Group for Great Britain, in one of the most jaw-dropping disciplines in gymnastics, against 11 other nations in the European Championships being held in Rzeszow in Poland.

The trio recently won the National Championships and currently hold the title of British Championships after their gold medal-winning performance this summer.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy is a high-performance centre in acrobatics for British Gymnastics. It is located in Ushaw Moor near Durham. Great Britain is one of the most respected nations in the world in acrobatic gymnastics and has achieved success at World and European level with medals in all categories. Many of whom have come from Deerness Gymnastics Academy.

“This trio of gymnasts have worked really hard over the past few year, continually improving through their hard work and commitment to the sport. They thoroughly deserved their success at the British Championships,” said Stuart Thompson, head of acrobatics, Deerness Gymnastics Academy. “This is their first call-up to represent their country and the whole club is very proud of them and will be getting behind them later this week in the European Championships. Their achievements will hopefully inspire and encourage more people to get involved with gymnastics and the club.”

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.

Gymnastics coaching is available to all ages from novice to elite level. Recreational classes are available for children from 3 years and baby gym sessions take place on weekdays.
