Disability Advisory Group Helps Shape Stockton Services

INFORMATION from a resident-run advisory group is helping to shape Council services for people with disabilities.

The Disability Advisory Group (DAG) was set up in 2006 following Stockton Council’s consultation on its Disability Equality Scheme. The group provides its members with information about council services, a forum to discuss ways to develop service delivery, and an opportunity to help shape Council policies and services.

In the past year DAG has helped to support the development of a range of policies, services and projects including changes to refuse collections to ensure pathways are clear and accessible. There have also been changes to the size of disabled car parking bays to meet the needs of mobility scooter users and consultations with park rangers about accessibility for parks and walks around the Borough.

Councillor David Coleman, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Access and Communities, said: “I would like to thank all members of the Disability Advisory Group for their valuable contributions and feedback about our services across the Borough.

“The information they continue to provide all helps to shape and improve Council services and make a difference for people with disabilities and their families. New members are always welcomed so if you are interested in getting involved, you can register your interest atdiversity@stockton.gov.uk or call 01642 528830.”

Linda Oliver, member of the Disability Advisory Group, added: “The Disability Advisory Group is delighted it has helped to shape support for people with disabilities in Stockton. The group has been really proactive, it is a great place to have your voice heard and influence the policies and procedures of Stockton Council.”

Membership of the group is open to any individuals with an interest in disability issues in Stockton Borough, including representatives of local disability groups. The meetings are held quarterly and usually at Stockton Central Library. Support is given with travel arrangements.

For further information about DAG and details about membership opportunities, contact Stockton Council’s Senior Cohesion and Diversity Officer, Satnam Singh, on 01642 528830.
