Renowned UK drummer and songwriter Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler returns with ‘The In Crowd’, a striking rework of the Billy Page classic, reimagined as a rallying cry in support of original music and the artists who create it.
Originally conceived as a lyrical “thank you” to musicians and supporters of original work, The In Crowd evolved into something far deeper and more personal. With 2025 marking ten years since the passing of Motörhead icon Lemmy Kilmister, Bowler shaped the project into a heartfelt tribute to a man whose influence and encouragement of original artists continues to resonate across generations.

Bowler’s connection to Motörhead runs deep. In 1992, he was asked to join the band during sessions that would later form part of March Or Die, recording demos alongside Phil Campbell and Würzel. Lemmy himself famously cited MC5 as a cornerstone influence, once stating: “Without the MC5, there would be no Motörhead, no Damned, no Ramones.”
Fittingly, Wayne Kramer, the legendary MC5 guitarist, agreed to contribute guitar to The In Crowd after hearing only the drum and bass tracks. Tragically, the recording would become one of his final contributions before his passing. His response on completing the session was simple and telling: “The track ROCKS!”
Unusually, the track was built from the ground up, beginning with a solo drum recording, allowing each contributor to layer their own identity and spirit onto the song. With the rhythm section complete, Bowler sought a vocalist with an authentic Motörhead connection. Enid Williams, founding member of Girlschool — a band closely intertwined with Motörhead’s history — completed the project with commanding, characterful vocals.
Bowler has also reworked the song’s lyrics, transforming The In Crowd into a dedication to everyone who plays in, supports, and believes in original music — a reminder that without original artists, there would be no covers, tributes, or samples.
The In Crowd stands not only as a celebration of musical lineage, but as a timely call to action.
