Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Go Walkabout with the Cook Birthplace Museum this Easter

Screen Shot 2016-03-30 at 15.31.26VISITORS are in for double the fun this Easter with not one but two exhibitions at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum.

Walkabout: Australian Aboriginal Life and Legend explores and celebrates the vibrant culture of ancient Australian Aboriginal society. On display are objects from Middlesbrough Museums Service’s own impressive, but rarely seen, collection of Aboriginal artefacts.

The Aboriginal culture is the oldest known surviving culture in the world.  At 65,000 years old, the Aboriginal people have shown an impressive ability to adapt to change. The exhibition gives an overview of Aboriginal culture and lifestyle, their relationships with the land and with neighbouring tribes through ceremonial ritual and trade.

The child-friendly exhibition includes a variety of interactive myths and legends throughout, which come together in a vibrant storytelling circle.  There’s sure to be something for everyone in the display, which will keep visitors returning again and again with their season tickets, valid for the rest of the year.

Pacific Predators gives visitors another chance to glimpse the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean and learn more about the predators lurking there.

The exhibition illustrates the world of the tiger shark, sperm whale and colossal squid hidden beneath the waves, along with their relationship with humans both today and in Captain Cook’s time

At the time that Cook was making his voyages, so little was known about these awe-inspiring predators that they were both feared and respected, and in some cultures even revered as gods or the spirits of ancestors.

A number of complementary family activities are taking place at the museum during the Easter holidays, on Tuesdays March 29 and April 5, and Thursdays March 31 and April 7. Craft sessions include making Aboriginal style kangaroos and mythical Rainbow Serpents, and are charged at 50p per child.

Entry to the Walkabout exhibition is included in the standard museum admission charge.

Entry to the Pacific Predators exhibition is free.
