Work originally started on Great Park, in Newcastle, back in 2001, and since then more than 1,500 homes have been built along with a new school, a state-of-the-art office complex and community sports facilities.

North East construction experts Gus Robinson Developments Ltd has secured a contract to build apartments above retail units which will form another facility for the community.

Work on the site, which is located three miles outside of Newcastle city centre, is due to get underway at the end of March and is expected to take 12 months to complete.

Steve Bell, Managing Director at Gus Robinson Developments, said: “This is the biggest scheme we have done to date, and we were delighted when we got the news that we were the preferred developer.

“It is quite a big project as the apartments are being created above retail units, and while it is a little bit different to the usual housebuilding schemes we do, it is good to work on a project like this.”

Gus Robinson Developments will create a total of 38 two-bedroom apartments at the site on behalf of social housing provider Benicia Homes.

The project adds to what has been a lucrative start to the year for the firm, which is also due to start work on a site in Plaisworth Road in Sacriston which will see 21 houses built on the site of a former school.

That contract will also last for 12 months, with a mixture of three and four-bedroom houses being built on behalf of Prince Bishop Homes.

Work is also underway on a site in Kenton, Newcastle, where a 15-apartment block is being created for adults with learning difficulties to enjoy independent living.

Steve continued: “That project is being carried out on behalf of ISOS Housing and Newcastle City Council.

“We have always been very strong in securing work in the south of the North East, so it is pleasing to be moving into new markets further north and we are confident that will help us as we continue to actively seek new clients.”

The latest work keeps Gus Robinson Developments Ltd on course to reach a turnover in excess of £20m by March 2017.
