livin futures is an employability programme designed by Housing and Communities business livin to support tenants and residents into sustainable employment.
Stephen Cant, a livin tenant from York Hill, Spennymoor was made redundant after 32 years’ service with his employer and struggled to find work for over four years. Supported by livin futures mentors Stephen was able to update his CV and target the type of work he was interested in. livin futures secured a four week placement for Stephen with their horticulture contractor Burleys to boost his confidence and gain new skills.
The placement proved successful for both Stephen and Burleys. His supervisor was so delighted with his work he has been offered a seasonal contract of employment.
Stephen said “I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I have always been a keen gardener and this way I will hopefully get to further my skills in something I love to do. I feel much more confident in myself; I can’t thank the livin futures team enough”
Stephen is a beneficiary of a wider regeneration programme in York Hill estate. The regeneration will transform the estate environmentally and aesthetically by refurbishing properties to high energy efficiency standards making them affordable houses to heat and run. livin is committed to sustaining tenancies in York Hill through employability and financial well-being initiatives, as well as encouraging community cohesion and helping York Hill to become a happier and more secure place to live .
Vicky Miller, community regeneration manager said “This is a great example of how providing support to people who need it really can change lives. livin futures has given Stephen the opportunities he needed to upskill, find employment and move into a new home in a community he wants to live in”
