North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Living Legacies of the First World War: The North East and Beyond

Held to coincide with Armistice Day on 11 November, The Living Legacies of the First World War: The North East and Beyond exhibition is the result of research led by Northumbria historians Daniel Laqua and James McConnel.

The exhibition aims to explore the region’s role during the First World War, with a particular emphasis on the links between the North East of England and wider national or international elements.

The exhibition explores two little-known connections, the first being the military links between the North East and overseas armies, including the stories of people from the region who served in the forces of New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States.

The second element focuses on matters closer to home, exploring the transformative impact the First World War had on higher education. This will include examples from the North East showing the development of university life after the war, as well as the efforts from students to build international links in the wake of military conflict.

The exhibition has been developed in collaboration with the Northumbria World War One Project, the National Union of Students and the Workers’ Educational Association.

It has received funding from several organisations, including two different World War One Engagement Centres of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the US Embassy in London and the Society for Educational Studies (SES).

The exhibition will be held from Tuesday 12 November to Saturday 16 November from 10am-4pm at the University Gallery, Sandyford Building, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8ST.

For further information, please contact Daniel Laqua (daniel.laqua@northumbria.ac.uk) or James McConnel (james.mcconnel@northumbria.ac.uk).

On Monday 11th November Northumbria University is hosting an opening reception for the exhibition at City Campus East – if you would like to attend please register here.
