CMA Songwriters Series – Feat. Randy Houser, Eric Paslay, Angaleena Presley and Michael Tyler

Wednesday 4 October, 7.30pm, Sage Two

The CMA Songwriters Series showcases the best of Country Music’s hit songwriters. The two-hour show will present a host of songwriters and artists together on stage, taking turns telling the stories behind their songs and performing them acoustically as originally written. With entertaining anecdotes and powerful performances, music fans have the opportunity to hear the stories, challenges, personalities and processes involved with writing songs that have become huge hits.

The CMA Songwriters Series has been presenting the very best of Country Music’s songwriters and artists, whose hits are known worldwide, since 2005. The shows are intimate presentations where songwriters exhibit their craft and share many of the stories behind the songs they have penned.

Randy Houser has racked up three consecutive No. 1 hits and more than four million in singles sales to date with his album, How Country Feels. He topped the charts with the title track, Runnin’ Outta Moonlight and Goodnight Kiss and earned critical acclaim for his powerful delivery of the Top 5 smash Like A Cowboy which was nominated for the 2015 CMA Song of the Year.

Eric Paslay is a breakout country artist who delivers a powerful musical punch and is a renowned, Platinum-selling hit songwriter and a dynamic performer who has enjoyed five No. 1 hits including Even If It Breaks Your Heart, Barefoot Blue Jean NightRewind and Friday Night, the big hit from his critically acclaimed self-titled debut album.

Angaleena Presley is a singer-songwriter raised in the small town of Beauty, Kentucky. Following her critically acclaimed 2015 debut, American Middle Class, she released the 12-track album Wrangled. Angaleena’s highly praised songwriting punches through each of the tracks, which she co-wrote with artists including Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Guy Clark.

Michael Tyler is a self-taught singer-songwriter/musician who began making music when he was eight and was discovered when he was 13 by Michael Knox, the producer best known for his work with Jason Aldean. When Tyler looked at his car’s dashboard after he arrived in Nashville from his hometown in Thayer, Missouri, he noticed a number that’s resonated with him since his arrival: 317. It’s no coincidence that the 23-year-old’s debut album is called 317, which includes the single They Can’t See.

Dweezil Zappa: 50 Years Of Frank

Sunday 8 October, 7.30pm, Sage One

50 years on from the first Mothers Of Invention album release Freak Out, Frank Zappa’s son Dweezil and his amazing band hand-pick their favourite tracks from Frank Zappa’s extensive back catalogue.

Exposed to the music industry from an early age, Dweezil Zappa developed a strong affinity for playing the guitar and producing music. Able to learn directly from world-class guitarists such as Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen, Dweezil quickly developed into a musical star in his own right, releasing his first single at the age of 12.

Since 2006, Dweezil put his own original music on hold, assembled a virtuoso band of musicians, and devoted himself to performing the music of Frank Zappa extensively at venues across the world, the only official act to do so since his father’s death in 1993.

In 2009, they were awarded a Grammy Award for best rock instrumental performance for their version of Peaches en Regalia. They were nominated in the same category in 2010 for their performance of The Deathless Horsie.

Jolie Holland and Samantha Parton (Founding Members of The Be Good Tanyas) plus Kathryn Williams

Sunday 8 October, 8.00pm, Sage Two

Fifteen years ago, Jolie Holland and Samantha Parton – two founders of the wildly popular group The Be Good Tanyas – first joined forces. Their new project, as always, is a page from the big book of North Americana and outsider folk.

Holland grew up in Texas, and by her teens was performing as a traveling musician. In the late ’90s, she called San Francisco home before making her way to Canada where she co-founded the Tanyas with Vancouver singer-songwriter Samantha Parton. Parton had spent her post-high school years travelling with her guitar, and drawing strong musical inspiration from visits to the southern US, she spent time living in New Orleans, Holland’s ancestral home.

After contributing to the Tanyas’ acclaimed Blue Horse LP, Holland moved back to San Francisco while Parton continued to tour and record with the group until a serious car accident took her off the road in 2012. With this new creative incarnation, expect to hear newly written originals, fresh arrangements of The Be Good Tanyas material, and songs from their individual catalogs.

Kathryn Williams has released eleven full-length albums under her own name, along with various side-projects, since her debut LP Dog Leap Stairs, was released in 1999.

As impressive a stat as that might be, it does little to capture the true magic of Williams work; the enchanting craft that has grown and expanded as she’s moved from one project to the next, from the breakthrough success of her Mercury Prize nominated Little Black Numbers LP to her Greatest Hits collection, which is not a greatest hits at all, in fact, rather an imagined retrospective for a fictional artist.
