Families visiting the children’s heart clinic at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital are being welcomed into a brighter and more calming space thanks to a partnership between Chuf (Children’s Heart Unit Fund) and Newcastle Hospitals Charity (NHC).

The two North East charities have worked together to refurbish Clinic E, home to the paediatric cardiothoracic outpatients service, creating a more comfortable and engaging environment for young patients and their families.

The transformation includes new wall artwork by Hannah Littler-Smith, improved wayfinding and colourful, child-friendly features to make hospital visits less daunting. Interactive screens have been installed in the waiting area, while smart TVs in scanning rooms help distract and relax children during appointments.

The project was jointly funded by Chuf and Newcastle Hospitals Charity, with input from hospital staff, patients and families helping to shape the final designs. A quiet, sensory-friendly room has also been kept screen-free to support children with additional needs.

Charlotte Campbell, Director of Fundraising and Operations at Chuf, said: “Clinic E is a place many families spend some of their most anxious moments. Creating a more welcoming space makes a real difference to how children and caregivers feel on the day. We’re very proud to have worked so closely with Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the Clinic E team to make this happen.”

Kelly Belmont, Charity Programmes and Partnerships Manager at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, added: “This project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when charities and hospital teams work together. The improvements will make a real difference to the experience of families visiting the clinic for years to come.”

The refurbishment forms part of Chuf’s mission to enhance holistic care and support for heart families across the North East and Cumbria, by funding projects that go beyond standard NHS provision.

Both charities have thanked supporters whose donations made the project possible and encouraged local businesses to get involved with future fundraising and partnership opportunities.
