Northallerton town is gearing up to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire, which will be passing through the town on Sunday 1st May.

Local businesses, including Simon Bailes Peugeot, Colin Hutson Accounting, BT Northallerton, Cowley Cycles and Bettys are getting behind efforts to maximise the benefits for the town and to ensure everyone has a day to remember.

The town is planning to stage various displays to support the Tour in the run up to the event and also on the day itself and John Forrest, Mayor of Northallerton has praised the organising committee for its efforts in making the Tour memorable for the town.

The Tour de Yorkshire enters the town through Quaker Lane towards Church Green where the Town Council and Simon Bailes Peugeot have organised food and drink stalls, a stage and a large LED screen, provided by the Northallerton Town Council and supported by BT Northallerton, North Yorkshire County Council and Hambleton District Council to enable local people and visitors to watch the Tour live as it heads to Northallerton and beyond.

There will also be various stalls and face painting provided by Northallerton Lionesses.

Simon Bailes Peugeot has a stand featuring the iconic 308 GTi in the distinctive two tone red and black coupe franche paintwork alongside a PS3 rally simulator to entertain the crowds.

The stage, sponsored by Simon Bailes Peugeot, will provide fun entertainment on the day and will be hosted by Tim Lichfield from Star Radio. There will be performances by local bands, entertainers and local community groups, singers, choirs and performers have been invited to join in the fun.

Anyone who would like to perform on the day is invited to contact the Northallerton Town Council ASAP. Any local schools or community groups who wish to be involved are also asked to get it touch.

Other entertainment on the day includes the May Fair at the North end of the High Street and an exhibition, organised by John Coulson, of vintage bikes from 1855 – 1982, which will be displayed in the lower hall of the Town Hall. The upper hall of the Town Hall will be used by volunteers helping out on the day, and for lost children.

Simon Bailes Peugeot has already commissioned a supply of wooden bikes which are available to local businesses and individuals to enable bespoke displays to be placed around the town. The wooden unpainted bicycles are about 5ft and priced at £25 each. The bicycles are available from the Town Hall or Simon Bailes Peugeot.

Many businesses have already taken bikes and are busy decorating them in style. Steve Cowley Cycles has kindly organised sponsorship of bikes to decorate the lampposts up and down the High Street which have been sponsored by JT Atkinson and Howdens Joinery.

Several businesses (Northallerton Round Table, Colin Hutson Accounting, Steve Cowley Cycles and Bettys) have also very kindly donated bikes to schools in the town to decorate which are going on the roundabout at South End of Town.

Simon Bailes said: “It is very rewarding to see the whole town come together to celebrate this exciting occasion.

This event is going to be a fantastic showcase for the town and everything it has to offer and it is so important that we make the most of it.”

Councillor John Forrest, Mayor of Northallerton commented: “I would just like to thank the people who have been involved with the organisation of the event which is taking place on the Church Green on the 1st May. It just goes to show what can happen when people and local businesses work together. We would also like to invite everyone to come along, get involved and have fun on Church Green or to see the vintage display which is on at the lower hall of the Town Hall”.
