Parents urged to have their say on free childcare

sccPARENTS across Sunderland are being asked for their views on the future of childcare in the city.

From September 2017, working parents may be entitled to up to 30 hours a week of free childcare for their nursery-aged child from the term after their third birthday until they start school.

To find out how many parents would need a place in Sunderland, the council is asking parents whose children might be eligible to answer a few simple questions.

Parents of children who will be younger than four years old by September 2017 are invited to have their say.

Cllr Louise Farthing, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services said: “We know many parents struggle to afford childcare. Extra free childcare for nursery aged children is obviously a good thing, however we need to ensure that we have the provision in the city to meet demand. We need to hear from our parents about what would work for them and then we can start planning for September 2017.”

Views can be submitted online at www.sunderland.gov.uk/childcare-survey-2016

Everyone who fills in the survey will be entered into a free prize draw to win swimming sessions for their child at one of the city’s Everyone Active centres. Terms and conditions apply. The competition will be drawn when the survey closes on Saturday 20 August.
