Rainbow class pupils from Heathfield Academy, Darlington, were treated to a visit to the Italian Al Forno Restaurant.

The Year 1 and 2 pupils were allowed to design and make their own pizzas with the experience culminating in them eating their own creations free of charge, thanks to the generosity of owner Erdal Kuzgun.

Assistant head teacher Sue Wilson said: “We have been studying fractions in maths and using paper pizzas to introduce the concepts of half and quarter. I mentioned this to Erdal and he invited us down so they could have a go at making the real thing.

“The children have really enjoyed the experience and will have tasted food that they had never come across before as well as get the chance to make their own and develop their table manners.”

Mr Kuzgun added: “We have just designed a new healthy menu for children with reduced sugar. I am a great believer in the importance of healthy food made from scratch. Something like this the children will remember and take back to their parents at home.”
