Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Pupils learn the value of money

cafe2SCHOOLCHILDREN have been earning their treats in an initiative designed to help them understand the value of money.

Reception pupils at West Park Academy, Darlington, spent the week collecting their pennies as rewards for good work in the classroom and playground to mark National Money Week.

Being smiley, kind and thoughtful, as well as reading independently, tackling tricky words and ordering their numbers were among a variety of tasks for which they could earn as they learn.

The week culminated in 30 pupils and their dads or granddads heading off to Finbar’s Café across the road to enjoy drinks and cookies.

Deputy vice principal Helen Dummett said: “The children have worked really hard to earn their £1, which they used to pay for their drinks and cookies. The whole exercise really helped them appreciate the value of money.”

Café manager Sarah Peart added: “We were thrilled to be able to help our local school in a part of Darlington which enjoys a real community spirit. The children were delightful customers.”
