Labour MP for Redcar, Anna Turley has called on the government to conduct an urgent environmental review into the former SSI site following concerns about the impact of hazardous waste on the local environment.
Anna raised the issue in Business Questions in the Commons chamber with the Industry Minister Anna Soubry MP.
In the chamber, Anna said:
“Last week I met a large number of companies who are currently involved in securing and maintaining the former SSI site in my constituency.
They expressed extreme and urgent concern about the environmental situation on the site, particularly in lieu of hazardous waste which they believe is affecting the environment.
Will the minister commit to an immediate and urgent environmental review of the site ahead of the implementation of the Mayoral Development Corporation?”
In her response, Soubry said decisions will be made before the Mayoral Development Corporation is established, when necessary.
