Residents are being invited to look at detailed plans for a new railway station in Horden.
In 2016, a consultation with the community of Horden and East Durham found that 98.6 per cent of respondents would use a new station should plans go ahead.
Since then, Durham County Council has worked closely with Network Rail to develop proposals, as well as undertaking ground investigations and improved access requirements.
The station will be located at South East View and in line with the current timetable run by the train operator on the Durham Coast Line, it is anticipated there will be an hourly service in each direction, with an estimated 71,000 passenger journeys every year.
Plans also include two unstaffed platforms with waiting shelters, benches, help points and CCTV as well as a car park with at least 150 spaces with taxi, drop off and bus route access.
A new access road, footpath and cycleway will also be installed, with a planned opening date of spring 2020.
The proposals will be shared at an engagement event at Horden Social Welfare Centre on Tuesday, 6 March between 3pm and 7.30pm.
Residents are invited to submit comments by emailing hordenrail@durham.gov.uk between now and Monday, 26 March 2018.
In July 2017, Durham County Council was awarded £4.4 million for the project by the Department for Transport’s New Stations Fund, with the Local Growth Fund and the council providing match funding.
Cllr Carl Marshall, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are excited to share more details about the new railway station at Horden and would encourage everyone to view the current proposals by coming to this event.
“The station will not only boost the profile of the area but will also offer residents much wider travel options and access to more employment opportunities.
“We will now continue our work with Network Rail and hope to finalise the plans later this year.”
