More than 250 people have already signed up for this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Walk on Sunday 25 September 2016. But don’t worry, there is still time to enter online and entries on the day will also be taken.

The BIG Walk is the last of the popular Active Sunderland programme of participation events for 2016. This year new routes have been introduced to take in some of Sunderland’s iconic landmarks. There is a route suitable for all ages and abilities covering distances of 3, 7.5 and 11.5 miles.

Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, added “The Active Sunderland BIG Walk is a fantastic, inexpensive opportunity for everyone to have a great day out surrounded by our beautiful scenery.

“We want to see as many people as possible taking part this year and I encourage everyone to take part and register for one of the three walks on offer”

With a choice of three different circular routes all starting and finishing in Herrington Country Park the walks will visit some of the city’s most attractive locations including the Victoria Viaduct, Penshaw Monument, Elba Park and the picturesque River Wear at Cox Green.

Keen local walker Jan Leach who took part in the BIG Walk last year said: “This is a great community event and I’m looking forward to the new routes this year, plus the free rucksack for all walkers will be something I can keep using”

The Active Sunderland BIG Walk will start at 10am on Sunday 25 September at Herrington Country Park. Entries are open online and your entry fee includes a rucksack, medal, goody bag and access to FREE family fun activities within the park.
