North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

A Lake District spa resort is working with a local college and training provider to give the next generation of spa therapists the skills and working opportunities to develop careers.

The partnership between Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, Kendal College and ESPA is designed to ensure that newly qualified therapists have an earlier opportunity to gain experience and earn a professional wage.

Spa therapists need a range of skills to launch their careers, from training in manicures, pedicures and facials through to aromatherapy and Swedish massage.

The ESPA certification delivered through the college will equip them with industry ready, high end, luxury brand training which is aimed at giving them a head-start in applying for jobs.

A contracted work experience at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa will then allow them to earn a proper spa therapist’s wage whilst developing their industry experience and customer service skills.

The idea is that they receive a more comprehensive training experience – both theoretical and practical – so that they are better prepared for the world of work.

“We want our spa therapists to thrive in the working environment,” explains Annabel Berry from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues.  “One of the biggest challenges for newly qualified therapists is getting on the first rung of the career ladder and gaining the experience they need.  Once we’d discussed this with Kendal College and ESPA, they were keen to help.

“Our initiative here at Low Wood Bay will allow them to get paid work experience which either leads to a permanent job here with the hotel group, or the chance to secure another job because of the experience they’ve acquired with us.  The ESPA certification will also ensure that our spa therapists are trained to the highest standards in both body and face treatments.”

Kendal College Head of Faculty for Leisure & service Industries Richard Axford adds:  “We are extremely proud to be collaborating with such high-quality brands as Low Wood Bay and ESPA. This will expose our learners to industry leading training and will mean they are qualified at a high level upon completion of their studies. Our motto is ‘creating bright futures’ and this pioneering scheme means our learners are better equipped and on a pathway to an outstanding career.”
