Screen Shot 2015-05-26 at 09.25.48TYNESIDE primary school children traded in their packed lunches for authentic Indian cuisine to enhance their awareness of international culture from an early age.

Children from Kells Lane Primary School enjoyed a visit to Angeethi restaurant in Low Fell, Gateshead, for an interactive lesson in Indian food and culture.

During their visit, some of the 60 little diners got to dress up in traditional Indian clothing whilst being treated to a variety of authentic Indian dishes to satisfy their taste buds, including poppadums, starters, curries and rice. They also enjoyed learning how to make their own naan breads.

Angeethi chefs taught the children about traditional Indian cooking and nutrition, and the origins of Indian spices, particularly how they are used in food, along with the medicinal benefits that they can bring.

The children also learned important health and safety procedures which should be followed in the kitchen.

Priya Mishra, owner of Angeethi, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the children into the restaurant and teach them about the culture of India. To see how receptive and enthusiastic they were was fantastic.

“They really enjoyed the selection of Indian dishes we prepared for them, with some of them having never tried Indian food before. With a dedicated children’s menu offering a range of traditional Indian dishes, our restaurant caters for all ages and palates and is perfect for families as there really is something for everyone.”
