Animal Stories

Get up and close with some curious and cute creatures in this hands-on workshop.
Children will meet and learn all about “Niffler” the hedgehog, “Gruff” the owl and “Peaches” the corn snake in the interactive session.

Cooking up some mischief

Suitable for ages 7-11 (Children under 7 are welcome but will require hands-on support from an adult and may not be able to take part in all of the activities)

Help Carolyn from The Canny Kitchen cook a fantastic selection of ‘Mischief Maker’ inspired dishes, cakes and biscuits. During this workshop children will get to taste some of the creations and take part in activities including making up their own recipe.
Mischief Makers is the theme of the Summer Reading Challenge 2018, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries.

Young Writers storybook masterclass with Tracey Iceton

Do you love a good story? Do you have a great imagination? Are you always making up your own stories? Then this workshop is just for you!
Young writers (aged 7+) are invited to join Tracey Iceton, for this fun, interactive creative writing and storytelling workshop. In this session, you will create cool characters and plan action-packed plots as well as giving you some tips on how to write vivid descriptions and give your characters something to say.
As well as making up your own story you’ll get to produce your own storybook, design a cover for it and do some eye-catching illustrations to go with your story. There will also be chance to read your stories and enjoy some storytelling with Tracey.

Little Red Riding Hood and Friends

Join us as Booster Cushion Theatre brings another brilliant show to The Word. Children will be captivated by this funny and immersive untraditional fairy tale.
Little Red Riding Hood’s friend arrives to tell the audience a story but has a problem – there are no pages in the book! As he tries to tell the story, chaos ensues and we meet a whole host of fairy tale characters to try and finish the story!
Children will revel in this magical and engaging show as they audition to be wolves, become Cinderella’s backing band and help Red Riding Hood’s dad chop down trees.

Monsters come in all shapes and sizes and you can find out about them all at our monster-tastic exhibition: Monsters! The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly.
Meet Boris Karloff’s classic movie monster in Dr. Frankenstein’s lab, see what it feels like to be held by King Kong and take a selfie with Sulley from Monsters Inc. You can read about children’s favourites such as the Gruffalo and Shrek and be reminded of the monsters from Hollywood’s golden age: Dracula, Wolf Man and the Mummy.

The Big Book of Monsters

Explore magical maps and mysterious landscapes with your own personal monster in this exciting installation inside our ground floor pod.
A giant, interactive book allows children big and small to strike a pose and make a shadow monster, and then, add their own page to a spooky story, by moving words across the screen.
Starting at Skull Island, choose from various destinations on the interactive map to start your own monster story and begin the adventure.
The interactive book includes sound, light and technology to create a captivating and immersive experience.
The Big Book of Monsters has been designed and built by ITHACA Studio and will feature as part of ourMonsters! The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly exhibition until January 2019.
