As part of a whole host of activities taking place in the city during the festive season, the city’s Business Improvement District has created “The Frostlings,” a brother and sister who will appear in and around the Christmas Frost Village.
And now the BID is asking young people to come up with some suitable names for the pair, with the best entry winning a family pass to the Frost Village comprising an ice skating session, fun fair vouchers and treats from the Christmas market.
The Frost Village, which is at the centre of the city’s seasonal activities programme, will feature an outdoor ice rink in Keel Square, with daily skating sessions and classes suited to everyone from children through to adults.
A traditional Christmas market with around 25 stalls will also be running, with the former Vaux site playing host to a festive fun fair with a range of rides.
The Frostlings are part of a number of illustrated characters which have been created by the BID to add some unique magic to Christmas in Sunderland.
“This is going to be a very special Christmas in Sunderland city centre,” said Ken Dunbar, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID.
“And for the first time we’re introducing our very own festive characters to add a very special frosty atmosphere to all the events we have planned.
“We’re sure youngsters will be able to come up with some great names for The Frostlings and I look forward to seeing how imaginative young people in Sunderland can be.”
Christmas in the city centre gets underway on November 26, with a Gala Ice Extravaganza featuring stars from TV show, Dancing On Ice.
Anyone wanting to name The Frostlings should send their suggestions – along with their name, age and contact details – to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday 6 November.
The Frost Village will be open Sundays to Wednesdays from 10am to 8pm and Thursdays to Saturdays from 10am until 10pm, with the Christmas fun fair opening from noon daily.
The real open air ice rink will offer a range of activities for all abilities including skating lessons, ice discos and skating with princesses and super heroes. On
Christmas Eve the Frost Village will close at 4pm and all ice skating sessions must be booked in advance.
