Calling all heroes!

CALVERT TRUST KIELDER is looking for ‘everyday superheroes’ to take part in the UK’s first mass-participation event aimed at encouraging those with disabilities to get into sport.

Launched by British Paralympian Sophia Warner, the ‘Superhero Tri’ takes place on 19 August at Dorney Lake, Berkshire, and is the first event in the only sports series which allows disabled and non-disabled people to take part in triathlons – either solo, or in a team.

Calvert Trust Kielder is entering three teams at the swim, bike and run/push event which can be completed as part of a relay with disabled and non-disabled family and friends.

As added motivation all disabled participants are invited to bring along a free ‘sidekick’ to assist them by pushing or guide them in completing the course.

Calvert Trust Kielder’s Charlotte Crumbley is organising the team and is asking interested ‘superheroes’ to get in touch as soon as they can.

She said: “There are 12 million people across the UK with disabilities and long-term injuries. Many of them are very active so it is only right that there is finally a sporting event which caters for everyone.

“This event will be a lot of fun, you don’t need to be a professional or have experience of competing. There’ll be no pressure – it’s about ‘what you can do’ not what you can’t, so if you need floats or a dinghy in the water, or want to use your powered wheelchair, then that’s fine.

“And there’ll be no worries about cut-off times or equipment restrictions. In fact, to quote the event organisers themselves, ‘anything goes’.”

There is also the chance to compete alongside a host of sporting celebrities including the likes of Paralympic champion Stephen Miller, double Paralympic, World & European 100m Champion Jonnie Peacock and five-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockcroft who are amongst the 20 celebrity ‘superheroes’ taking part.

Charlotte added: “The main priority is to have fun. Everyone at Calvert Trust Kielder knows what a positive impact sport can have on a person’s life – and this is a chance to take part and reap those benefits.”

Located in Kielder Water & Forest Park, Calvert Trust Kielder is a registered charity which enables guests of all abilities to achieve their potential through the challenge of outdoor adventure.
