Wharton ParkThousands of families flocked to Durham’s newly restored Wharton Park as it reopened following a £3m restoration.

The popular “People’s Park” has undergone a year-long facelift, with added attractions such as a new heritage centre and playgrounds alongside a restored amphitheatre, putting green and miniature car track.

And, as it opened its gates over the Bank Holiday weekend, more than 10,000 people turned out to see the results of the renovations for themselves.

Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, arts and culture, said: “Wharton Park’s celebration weekend proved a great success, with everyone enjoying the play areas, putting green and electric cars.

“It was fantastic to see so many people there – and not just local people, but those who had travelled into the city to experience one of our hidden gems.

“The park has for almost 160 years been at the heart of the Durham community and I hope that through this refurbishment we have made it possible for families to enjoy it for many years to come.”

During the celebration weekend more than 500 children had a go on the newly refurbished miniature car track.

Its restoration, like the rest of the 4.3 hectare park, was carried out thanks to £2.45 million from the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery funds, with additional support from the council and the Durham Area Action Partnership bringing the total investment to £3 million.

Other family friendly events included live performances, wandering storytellers, free arts and crafts, coached sports sessions, outdoor gym equipment classes and circus workshops from Let’s Circus.

New Zealand duo Brothers Swag also brought their playful comedy to the amphitheatre, with top class mini-hooping, giant balloons, whip cracking and hats used to build mind bending and beautiful illusions.

Wharton Park is now open daily. For more information visit www.durham.gov.uk/whartonpark
