With every passing year, the number of global citizens who own smart devices such as mobiles and tablets continues to rise and it’s no different in the North East.
Back in 2016, for example, the estimated number of smartphone users was fixed at 2.1 billion. By the end of this year, however, it’s thought that more than five billion people will own and operate a mobile phone, with most in the US, the UK and China, whilst the smartphones that we use have become increasingly sophisticated in their capabilities..
As smartphone ownership increases, so too does the amount of time that we spend on our handsets and apps. But how much time exactly do we spend on our smartphones and associated mobile apps?
Breaking Down Mobile App Usage in the States
Last year, it was estimated that UK and American. adults spent an average three hours and 35 minutes on their technology devices each day, with this number having increased by 11 minutes in comparison with the figures from 2017.
By the end of this year, a similar increase is expected, creating a scenario where mobile will surpass TV as the most watched entertainment medium on a daily basis.
Most of the additional time spent on mobile devices will come from smartphones, which account for around two-thirds of the total minutes spent online. This is despite the fact that the rate of growth in smartphone minutes has slowed gradually in recent times, with depreciation in tablet usage growth falling at a more pronounced level.
Regardless of this, it’s undoubtedly apps that dominate the minutes that we spend on our mobile devices each and every day. In fact, 90% of all time spent browsing a smartphone is dedicated to apps, whilst this figure falls slightly to 79% in the case of tablets.
The takeaway here is clear; as despite a slight decline in growth rates, the people of the UK are spending more time than ever before on their smart devices. Not only this, but they’re also devoting most of this time to mobile apps, which are part of a growing and increasingly diverse market.
Which Apps are we Spending our Time on?
OK, we hear you ask, but which apps are we spending the vast majority of our time browsing on our smartphones and tablets?
It’s not easy to answer this question succinctly, with so many functional and games-based and betting apps currently available to players across Android and iOS. However, there are some apps that continue to command a larger audience than others, particularly across the North East region,
One app sector that has started to thrive is the sports betting and casino gaming niche, which is increasingly dominated by remote usage. This trend followed a key development last year, when the Supreme Court overturned a 1992 ruling that prohibited online sports betting in all 50 states of the USA.
The FOBT decision in the UK has also led to a rise in the usage of sports betting apps, with competition high in the UK market, it takes a mix of enticing promotions, good game variety and seamless experiences across numerous devices to be amongst the best UK betting apps, and to keep repeating that trick does mean staying ahead of the game which means offering new and innovative features and promos regularly.
