ORGANISERS of a local charity netball event are spreading the word about road closures as their 24 hour Netballathon coincides with a major cycling event set to take place in Stockton on Saturday 25 June.
The Teesside Netball League 24 Hour Netballathon is taking place from noon on Saturday 25 June until Sunday 26 June at Durham University Queens Campus sports centre in Stockton. This coincides with Stockton Cycling Festival which also takes place across the weekend. The Netballathon will see nine teams from the league take to the courts for a marathon session of netball to raise money for Trinity Holistic Centre at James Cook Hospital and the North Tees Chemotherapy Day Unit.
Both have been selected to benefit from funds raised at the event following the support they have given two Teesside Netball League members as they battle cancer.
League members have worked together to stage the event which includes a family fun day from noon until 9pm on Saturday 25 June. Highlights include a bottle game, tombola, guess the weight of the cake, nail painting, refreshments and a raffle with a host of prizes from local businesses. Players have also been issued sponsor forms to add to the money raised at the event.
Kath Callan, organiser of the event and of the Teesside Netball League, said:
“I am really proud of our league members who have worked together to make this event possible and would like to thank local companies who have also shown their support. Seeing our two ladies battle this awful disease really brings it home to all in our league that cancer can strike anyone at any stage in their lives. We want to raise as much money as possible to help these units who support cancer sufferers on Teesside.”
“With only days left to the big day we are really excited and hoping that the road closures don’t prove too confusing for our players and members of the public who are welcome to come along and show their support. With such a big cycling event on our doorstep we are hoping that people will pop across the Infinity Bridge, which is close to the campus, and call in to show their support and enjoy some family fun.”
